The Mayflower Pub
About This Spot
Walking into The Mayflower Pub is like stepping into a familiar, quietly cherished corner of San Rafael. The low lighting and dark wood accents invite you to slow down, settle in, and trade the rush of the outside world for a moment of easy camaraderie. Time here moves at a comfortable pace — unhurried but attentive — where the clink of a well-poured pint and the hum of friendly chatter create a backdrop that never feels rushed or crowded.
This is a spot where the spirit of an old Irish pub lives on in the Pacific Northwest, with an atmosphere that strikes a warm balance between unpretentious and welcoming. Whether you find yourself nestled at the bar with a creamy Irish coffee or tucked into a booth catching up with friends over a shared plate, there’s an effortless sense of connection to place and people.
The kitchen quietly honors classic pub traditions, treating familiar comfort dishes with care that speaks of long nights and well-loved recipes. From robust stews and savory pies to crisp fish and chips, each bite feels like a small celebration of simple, satisfying flavors — the kind you return to when you want something dependable but thoughtfully made. Pair those dishes with a well-curated selection of English and local beers, and the experience deepens without fuss.
Overshadowing the menu, though, is the humanness of the place: the attentive yet relaxed service that hints at a place rooted in community, where faces are known and newcomers are quickly made to feel part of the story. The Mayflower isn’t about flash or trends; it’s about comfort and continuity, a gathering spot where the weight of years adds to the quiet charm, with a spirit that’s both slightly nostalgic and very much alive.

Great English pub. All the comfort food you'd expect. I had the shepards pie while the little lady had the fish and chips. Perfect selection of local and english beers. Kinda dark, but it that's part of the authentic feel. Worth a stop if you are in San Rafael. Been around for as long as I can remember (80's)

Great English Pub! The food is great and the staff is always friendly and fast. Even though I only go every now and then the staff always make me feel like a welcomed regular. Lots of indoor dining and a new outdoor dining area during COVID. Best bangers and mash I've had in California. Wings are pretty good but there are better in the bay area. But that's no reason to not give Mayflower a visit. You'll be missing out if you don't!

Great friendly service! Beer selection was well rounded, meaning they had something for everyone’s tastes and the food was great. I had the Icelandic fish and chips and I couldn’t tell that I was not in Iceland. I was just in Iceland, literally their fish and chips were very comparable to the fish and chips I had in a pub in Reykjavik. The basil vinegarette salad dressing was amazing too and the salad ingredients were very fresh.

A great, authentic pub where you can get a black and tan to go with your fish and chips.

Cozy and quaint little English pub in San Rafael. Good place to hang out or have lunch. Overall, delightful.

It's an old English pub. As advertised. When I walked in, English Football was on all screens, with everyone in there watching. The fish & chips was bountiful and delicious, and the lady with her hands of the helm at that moment didnt skip a beat. As soon as I sat down, she was there to ask what I needed. Never not a good idea to stop by here. You never know howobg places like these will last in this day and age. Its still a true gem of downtown San Rafael.

Such good food and nice people. You can’t lose on the menu. Coming here of course I get the bangers and mash, the fish and chips, and the shepherds pie. All absolutely excellent.
